Newport’s ‘Primo Vino’ Festival On Tap For Sept. 19-22
‘Fair’ Warnings, MGM Springfield’s ‘Onederful’ Anniversary & Much More
Welcome back to Random Raven, the column that aspires to be nothing less than your complete, entertainment itinerary on a month-to-month basis.
Setting our sights on September, the Raven must of course give “fair” warning with regards to several of the area’s more notable, annual autumnal offerings. These include, but are not limited to, the Four Town Fair in Somers (Sept. 12-15, fourtownfair.com), The Ellington Fireman’s Carnival (Sept. 5-8, ellingtonfire.org), and of course, The Eastern States Exposition (see pages 4-6).
But that noted, it’s also that time of the year when our friends over in the Ocean State roll out one of the region’s primo “vino” laden events. Namely, the 14th annual Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival.
From Sept. 19 – 22, the historic mansions will once again be the spectacular setting for the Rose & Winecliff dinner and two-day Grand Tasting, the latter of which offers guests the chance to sample hundreds of wines from around the world and cuisine from nearly two dozen regional restaurants and caterers.
FOOD & WINE Magazine Culinary Director-at-Large and “Mad Genius Tips” host Justin Chapplewill headline the Grand Tasting, cooking on the MONOGRAM Culinary Stage on Saturday, Sept. 21 followed by an appearance at the MONOGRAM Pizza Oven.
Kevin Des Chenes, celebrity chef to such clients as Giuliana Rancic, Kathie Lee & Hoda, Isaiah Thomas, and Tim McGraw, and author of “Beyond My Chef Coat,” will take to the MONOGRAM Culinary Stage on Sunday, Sept 22.

LAST but not least, fans of the yeast (and hops) will want to visit Bloomfield’s Back East Brewery (backeastbrewing.com) Sept. 21. That’s the date for the venue’s ode to Oktoberfest, replete with Oompah music, German food trucks and more. No joke, donning lederhosen can also score you a free pint, too!
Iconic rockers Aerosmith (pictured) helped usher in MGM Springfield’s “Onederful” first year anniversary with a recent, four show stint at the venue’s MassMutual Center. Live music continues at MGM Springfield with Spin Doctors, Verve Pipe and Crash Test Dummies Sept. 13 and multi-platinum selling ’90s band Live Sept. 18.
Newport Mansions’ Wine & Food Festival pits gourmet cuisine with world class wines in a Gatsby-esque atmosphere this month.
