CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS
Children’s Music Concert titled “Teaching Peace” with singer/songwriter Red Grammer – Wednesday, May 8th at 6:00 p.m. 
“Teaching Peace” was called “one of the top five children’s recordings of all time” by the All Music Guide and received a coveted Parents’ Choice “Classic” Award. “Teaching Peace” includes songs of caring, conflict resolution and community. His family-friendly concerts are fun, interactive and engaging while promoting messages of being kind, positive thinking and helping others. This free family event will be held in the Somers Elementary School Auditorium. Call the library at 860-763-3501 to register for this event. Sponsored by the Friends of the Somers Library.

Read to a Dog – Saturday, May 11th from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Practice your reading skills by reading to a dog in a relaxed, “dog-friendly” atmosphere. All dogs have been trained, tested and certified by Healers with Halos. Participants may bring a book or select one at the library. The time slots are for fifteen minutes at 10:30, 10:45, 11:00, and 11:15. Registration is required.

Summer Reading News! Our summer reading program will begin on June 17th and run until August 2nd. The 2019 theme, A Universe of Stories, honors the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, which occurred on July 20th, 1969. Many of our programs will include the space theme such as Mad Science, a Starlab, and the Magic of Scott Jameson. We will be offering a variety of free events, storytimes, contests and prizes all summer! All ages are invited to participate. A schedule of events will be coming soon. TEEN EVENTS
Crafternoons – Wednesdays, May 1, 8, 15, 21 & 28 at 3:00 p.m. Each week, we get together to craft, draw, or paint. Often we have a specific project, but there is always the flexibility to follow your own path. 

Acoustic Jam – Thursday, May 16 at 3:00 p.m. We get together monthly with our guitars, ukuleles, and other instruments to play simple, easy songs. Songbooks, charts, and even some instruments are available. If the weather is nice, we’ll play outside in the library’s courtyard.

Teen and Parent Paint Night – Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00 p.m. A night out for teen/parent pairs to get together to paint a still life portrait. Supplies will be provided. Just bring a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or an uncle, and a positive attitude. Teen/adult pairs can reserve their places by calling 860-763-3501.

Tech Tuesdays from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Reference Librarian Cecelia Becker will give instruction on the month’s tech topic. 

Craft and Chat! –Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Bring your project and any tools or materials you need. 

Adult Coloring Club –Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Colored pencils and books are provided, or you can bring your own.

Birds of the New England Swamp – Wednesday, May 15th at 6:00 p.m. Wildlife photographer Peter Christoph presents a narrated slideshow, sharing both his award-winning images and his photographic secrets as he brings you inside a typical New England swamp. Christoph’s book “The Art of Bird Photography” will be available for purchase ($22.95) and signing at the presentation. S Prestley Blake and the History of Friendly Ice Cream – Monday, May 20th at 6:00 p.m. Join Friendly’s Ice Cream Co-Founder, local resident, S Prestley Blake and Rose Slate, Friendly’s Ice Cream Historian, for a book signing and presentation on the history of Friendly Ice Cream Corp. S Prestley Blake’s autobiography “A Friendly Life” will be available for purchase and signing at the presentation. Please call (860) 763-3501 to register for this event. 

Saturday, June 8th at 2:00 p.m. – Adventures in Cinema: Sherlock, Jr. Speaker Michael DiRaimo leads a viewing and discussion of the humorous 1924 Buster Keaton film. 

Tuesday, June 25th at 6:00 p.m. – Pastel Workshop: The Starry Night Pastel painter and teacher, Gregory Maichack, will lead attendees in a workshop to paint their own “Starry Night,” inspired by Vincent Van Gogh.
